An association captive is similar to a group captive but is owned by members of a trade or industrial association, it’s managed by that association, and limited only to members of that association. A captive insurer having two or more owners, typically members of an industrial trade association.  Sometimes the association itself is the owner of the captive. An example could be a collection of Auto Dealers or Builders within a region.

A group captive is owned and controlled by multiple organizations to insure the risks of its collective owners. A group captive tends to deal with more third party businesses so it tends to have a more positive tax approach. This is similar to an Association Captive.

This is common in the heavy industry 1st and 2nd tier suppliers of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) organizations.

A unit of an existing offshore (US alien) captive, licensed in Tennessee to write employee benefit business for its owners and affiliates onshore. The branch is regulated as a pure captive, is taxed only on the branch writings and is required to use an onshore trust for the protection of US policyholders and ceding insurers. This is distinctly for large international organizations.
